Venango Relay for Life raises more than $15,000 | Front Page

10 June 2018

Michelle Hart is no stranger to Relay for Life.

Phillips said the "support and camaraderie" of the people she's met over the decade that she has volunteered for Relay for Life is something that makes the event more than just a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society.

Beginning this afternoon at 4pm until 11pm, Local cancer survivors and their caregivers will take the celebratory first lap at the following American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

"But Relay for Life is important because of the money it raises to critical cancer research", she said. The second-highest amount raised by an individual this year was $2,615. "We felt we needed to do something about it, and we do that by spreading awareness, raising money for cancer research, encouraging people to know the symptoms and get tested regularly". "It doesn't mean we have to empty our bank account for somebody".

"We're really excited about this change because this venue gives us a lot more opportunities to grow the event. We need to work together".

Angela Frederick, a mother of a member of McDonald's Team Cancer Busters, said the group is comprised of McDonald students who heard about Relay For Life and wanted to do something to help.

The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. "If they haven't registered yet we would encourage them to register as a team, as a participant, as a survivor".

A year ago alone, the lodge has hosted 32 patients and guests from the county, whom stayed 218 nights total.

All the Newtown children and spouses of dads who have lost the battle with cancer, and those dads who have selflessly taken on the role of caregiver when a spouse or child has been diagnosed, will be honored in an extra special way this Father's Day by the many residents who will take to the Blue & Gold Stadium track during the community's 2018 Relay for Life. Hundreds of supporters cheered as cancer survivors made their victory lap around the camping area at Colasanti's.

"(Survivors are) the reason why we plan this event", Zeller said. "I'm a firm believer that wherever I am at any given moment is exactly where God wants me to be".

The theme for this year's Relay, slated for 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Columbine Park, is "Strike Out Cancer", and we're hoping the event is a home run.

"I Relay for those who can't". I Relay because I recently spoke to over 500 4th, 5th and 8th graders and 98% of them knew someone with Cancer!

They day's events include bounce houses for kids, silent auction and the luminary ceremony to honor those who lost the fight and recognize those survivors still with us today.

As community champion for the Sydney Relay for Life, taking place Friday at Centre 200 in Sydney, Phillips will be one of the guest speakers.

"It's very quiet and very memorable and very somber", Zeller said. "It's just one big family".

"It can be exhausting but it can also be exhilarating when you see events like last Friday's where so many survivors come out".
