Michelle Hart is no stranger to Relay for Life.
Phillips said the "support and camaraderie" of the people she's met over the decade that she has volunteered for Relay for Life is something that makes the event more than just a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Beginning this afternoon at 4pm until 11pm, Local cancer survivors and their caregivers will take the celebratory first lap at the following American Cancer Society Relay For Life.
"But Relay for Life is important because of the money it raises to critical cancer research", she said. The second-highest amount raised by an individual this year was $2,615. "We felt we needed to do something about it, and we do that by spreading awareness, raising money for cancer research, encouraging people to know the symptoms and get tested regularly". "It doesn't mean we have to empty our bank account for somebody".
"We're really excited about this change because this venue gives us a lot more opportunities to grow the event. We need to work together".
Angela Frederick, a mother of a member of McDonald's Team Cancer Busters, said the group is comprised of McDonald students who heard about Relay For Life and wanted to do something to help.

The theme for this year's Relay, slated for 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Columbine Park, is "Strike Out Cancer", and we're hoping the event is a home run.

As community champion for the Sydney Relay for Life, taking place Friday at Centre 200 in Sydney, Phillips will be one of the guest speakers.
"It's very quiet and very memorable and very somber", Zeller said. "It's just one big family".
