One in 5 American adults experiences some form of mental illness in any given year.

In 2016 the Department of Justice claimed that the state of Louisiana was unnecessarily relying on nursing homes to serve people with a serious mental illness. Many people don't seek treatment or remain unaware that their symptoms could be connected to a mental health condition.

The organization said that suicide is the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 15 to 29; while close to 800,000 people die by suicide every year worldwide.

An estimated 26 percent of homeless adults in the nation who stay in shelters live with serious mental illness, and a little more than 50% of adults who experience a substance use disorder also have a co-occurring mental illness.
