AC Milan encourage Man Utd boss Mourinho to firm up Bonucci interest

United could battle it out with Bayern Munich to sign AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci next season, according to reports in the Sun.

Several centre-back's have been linked with United in recent months but Bonucci has emerged as a potential target and it looks like Mourinho has stepped-up his interest in the Milan star.

Tuttosport reports that Mourinho has identified Bonucci as a target to solve his defensive issues and has made contact with the 31-year-old about joining Old Trafford.

Milan missed out on the Champions League this term, despite spending over £210m on new signings last summer.

Bonucci attracted interest from Chelsea and Real Madrid a year ago, but due to the poor health of his son, he remained in Italy and swapped Juventus for the San Siro.

As far as Bonucci is concerned, should a transfer materialise, it could happen sooner rather than later as Italy won't be involved in the World Cup.

He was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea and Manchester City last summer, but ultimately made a decision to remain in his home country, moving to big spending AC Milan.

However, there are suggestions that the centre-back could consider leaving the Italian peninsula this time around, especially after AC Milan failed to qualify for the Champions League.
