What exactly is going on with the disgraced 'king of Donkey Kong'?

Last week, Twin Galaxies announced it had stripped Billy Mitchell of his Donkey Kong high score records when new evidence of emulation software use came to light.

It appears that he was actually playing the games on a Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator (MAME), which is against Twin Galaxy Rules, and a video of the record-breaking game of Donkey Kong shows transitions between levels which are not possible on an original arcade machine.

Mitchell has been a big name in gaming for decades, holding several world record scores.

The video, courtesy of Old School Gamer Magazine, finds Mitchell at the Midwest Gaming Classic. For that reason, Twin Galaxies requires that all valid high scores be achieved on original hardware, something it's no longer convinced Mitchell did after its investigation.

Billy Mitchell's Donkey Kong and Pac-Man records have been disqualified by Guinness World Records. 'All the things that were happening at the time... like why he didn't come out and play me, and why he was inciting whose records were going to be authenticated and who's were going to be dropped. He reminds us that he and, presumably, his team will "show that everything was done professionally, according to the rules, according to the scoreboard, and the integrity that was set up". "I wish I had it in my hands right now".

Only time will tell what Mitchell's investigation will bring, or if Twin Galaxies and Guinness will even consider any evidence that's uncovered. "But it's taken a considerable amount of time, witnesses, documents, everything, everything will be made available to you, nothing will be withheld".

While Mitchell making a new attempt at the Donkey Kong world record would have been a more entertaining, if dramatic response, this story clearly isn't over just yet.

It remains to be seen what sort of evidence Mitchell has at his disposal to prove his innocence, but this will be the continuation of an already enthralling saga.
