Seven inmates killed in riot at maximum-security prison

16 April 2018

A SC prison spokesman reported Monday morning that seven inmates are dead and 17 others were injured after a brawl broke out inside Lee Correctional Institution.

Jeff Taillon spoke after State Law Enforcement Division agents helped secure Lee Correctional Institution around 3 a.m. Monday.

Mr Taillon said multiple fights broke out between inmates at 7.15pm on Sunday.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections tweeted that it involved multiple inmate-on-inmate altercations in three housing units.

He said no officers were wounded.

The incident at Lee Correctional Institution resulted in seven inmate deaths and 17 other inmates requiring medical attention, the S.C. Department of Corrections announced early Monday morning.

Some local media outlets reported the local coroner had been called to the scene.

In 2015, two officers were stabbed in a fight. One inmate killed another in February this year.
