Apple releases iOS 11.4 beta 2 to developers

16 April 2018

Two of the main new features found within Apple's original beta release of iOS 11.4 were AirPlay 2 and Messages in iCloud, both of which were announced nearly a year ago at WWDC 2017 but so far have failed to be included within any iOS 11 public release.

It's been exactly two weeks since Apple released the first developer betas for iOS 11.4, watchOS 4.3.1, and tvOS 11.4, which is that it's time for the second developer betas. We'll show you how anyone can download it right now. Just connect to WiFi, go to Settings General Software Update and you can just tap on Download and Install here to top things off.

Some of the key features that you'll find in iOS 11.4 are Messages in iCloud and AirPlay 2, which were both announced previous year. We're also seeing frequent mentions of AirPlay 2 and hints that stereo support for multiple Apple HomePods is on its way.

In iOS 11.4, Apple brings back iMessage in the Cloud, a feature that was initially previewed in iOS 11.3 but removed before the update could reach the public. Currently, iMessages are technically supposed to sync between all your different devices, but the messages are stored locally, making the syncing inconsistent at best.

When the user removes a message in a conversation using one Apple device, the same message will also be deleted other device platforms, like the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. The rollout hasn't been seamless, however, and it seems like Apple is struggling to make a service secure, private, and reliable.
