Arguably the sport's first superstar, Bristow also won five World Masters titles and four World Cup Singles titles.

Bristow, who won a total of 70 career titles overall, will go down in history as one of the sport's greatest, having been inducted into the PDC Hall of Fame in 2005.

Barry Hearn, chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation, led tributes to Bristow, calling him a "legend in the world of darts and British sports". "He was a tremendous player and a huge character and even after his retirement fans would travel for miles to meet him and see him play", Hearn said.

Bristow was a pioneer within darts and one of the first stars of the sport. He died after collapsing at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, where he was attending a Premier League fixture. "What he's done for our game, tonight, if it wasn't for Eric, no one would be here tonight".

Taylor went on to defeat Bristow in the 1990 World Championship final, while a 6-0 defeat to Dennis Priestley the following year proved to be his last appearance in a televised final. "Rest in peace old friend".

Eric, a five-time world champion between 1980 and 1986, was remembered for his phenomenal sporting prowess. "RIP Eric Bristow. Thanks for everything you did for darts". He later appeared on British television programme "I'm a Celebrity". He kept me sane and focused in I'm A Celeb and was a amusing, forthright, no-nonsense friend.

Three-time world champion John Lowe tweeted: "I didn't want to share this message, Eric has passed away, my rival, my friend, my drinking pal, lost a part of my life tonight". My thought are with his family at this sad time.
