Sonos One and Google Home Max Sound Better Than Apple HomePod

14 February 2018

Engadget reports the HomePod has been built so third party repair shops can not fix the device, it will have to be sent to Apple.

The report reads: "The HomePod's bass was a bit boomy and overemphasized". But how does the sound quality measure up to existing models like the Google Home Max and Sonos One? This manual effort takes about a minute and, just like the HomePod setup process, it only works on Apple iOS devices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, of which Apple is a component, has gained 20% in that time. Until we see the numbers, it can't be said with much certainty if the company had limited stock or Homepod was in high demand.

Updated on February 12: The HomePod will cost at least $279 to fix. To add insult to injury, the current version of Siri on the Apple HomePod does not differentiate a user from another.

With the release of the Apple HomePod last February 9, the Internet is buzzing with reviews after reviews of the smart speaker. Fortune's Don Reisinger noted in his review that the HomePod's sound was better than the Echo and Home, but he conceded that the "sound quality isn't something that can justify its lofty price tag".

So with all the popularity of the Echo - which is now in its second generation - why should you consider Apple's HomePod?

Here's the thing though: How often do you physically move speakers that plug into an outlet?

The findings are unfortunate news if you're the sort who's comfortable with repairing a speaker when it breaks. Reviewers gave the HomePod audio a "Very Good" rating.

The 6.8-inch tall HomePod uses an advanced algorithm that is touted to continuously analyse the music and tune the low frequencies dynamically.

One of the best things about HomePod is that it automatically detects the environment in the room it is placed in and adjusts its audio settings appropriately. If audio quality matters above all else, we recommend going with the Google Home Max or two Sonos One smart speakers. It also failed to match the audio performance of the cheapest offering from multi-room wireless audio leader Sonos.

But if you get in a pickle from the start, Apple's new user guide will set you straight. But unless you're a member of the Cult of Mac, best to hold off on a HomePod for now.
