Pyeongchang Olympic organizers are investigating a possible attack on their internet and Wi-Fi systems that took place about 45 minutes before the opening ceremony.

Later Saturday night, they all joined the chief of the International Olympic Committee to watch the debut of the inter-Korean team in the women's ice hockey tournament.

Elsewhere, gold medals are on offer in cross-country skiing, biathlon, speed skating, short track speed skating and ski-jumping and the first gold medal of the 2018 Olympics is likely to come in cross country skiing. NBC tweeted on its official @NBCOlympics page: "A swarm of drones brings us one of the most incredible sights of the #OpeningCeremony".

The glamorous ladies, all in their late teens or early 20s, are said to be handpicked from elite universities and undergo strict background checks.

North Korea's Alpine skiing coach says it's an "honor" to compete at the Pyeongchang Olympics, though he doesn't expect much from any of his three athletes.

US officials have been urging South Korea to be cautious in its rapprochement with the North - a point Pence drilled home in private meetings with Moon on Thursday.

The North only agreed last month to attend its first Olympics in the South, but each time Pyongyang considers sending a delegation to a sporting event in South Korea drama often seems to follow.

North Korea has a persistent army of hackers that has attacked central banks and movie studios.

They were seated not far from a section of North Korean cheerleaders who are attending the Olympics in a sign of warming ties between the two Koreas that Pence and other US officials have warned against.

"We will continue to intensify our maximum pressure campaign until North Korea takes concrete steps for complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization", Pence said, calling on South Korea to work in tandem.

Fielding the joint hockey team was one of the key agreements the Koreas have struck after several rounds of talks at the border on how to cooperate during the Olympics, which run through February 25.

The warm reception was at odds with the position taken by USA vice-president Mike Pence.

As a way to support North Korean believers and to understand their hardship, pain and courage, Open Doors has asked Christians to live like a North Korean with their Lent resource of the same name.

The athletes elicited a standing ovation by most leaders in the VIP box, including Moon and Kim's sister.

In January 1968, Kim Yo Jong's grandfather, founding North Korean president Kim Il Sung, sent a squad of North Korean commandos to Seoul who tried unsuccessfully to kill then-president Park Chung-hee.

Moon met Kim Yo Jong - a close confidante of her brother and the first member of the dynasty to set foot in the South since the Korean War - and the North's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong Nam at the Blue House in Seoul.

In its efforts to bring North Korea to the Pyeongchang Games, South Korea paused joint military exercises with the USA and relaxed a series of sanctions, including on individuals like Ms. Kim.
