Last month, a White House official told reporters Pence would attend the Winter Olympics opening to cheer American athletes and to counter any North Korean effort to "hijack" the games with a propaganda campaign.
Among the previously incomprehensible scenes seen in the last 24 hours at the Olympics was this one: After the game the top North Korean officials and the South Korean president joined Bach in greeting the Korean players and posing for pictures with them. "And that is, demand at the outset of any new dialogue or negotiations that the Kim regime put denuclearization on the table and take concrete steps with the world community to dismantle, permanently and irreversibly, their nuclear and ballistic missile programs", Pence said.
The statement from the Ministry of Unification came after a high-level North Korean delegation concluded a three-day visit which included an invitation for South Korean President Moon Jae-in to travel to Pyongyang for talks. "There are some who would not want to be in the same room together if it wasn't for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics".
While internet and wifi were affected across the Olympic site - spread over two main venues in mountainous eastern South Korea - organisers said there was no impact on competition, which got into full swing on Saturday.
"She (Kim Yo Jong) is not charming, she is a dictator's sister", Laila said."She is not looking after North Korean people".
"We should firmly keep in mind any talks where denuclearisation is not a precondition only buy North Korea more time to complete its nuclear capabilities while they fool us with their peace offensive façade", said Chang Je-won, spokesman for the Liberty Korea Party.
At the 2003 University Games in Taegu, accusations that local right-wing groups had "ransacked" bedrooms and stolen underwear at the North Korean delegation's hotel prompted the cheerleaders to down pom-poms in protest.
The unscheduled meeting, the sources said, underscored the need for the two sides "to work closely to continue to remind South Korea that it should not move any closer towards North Korea". The North's taekwondo team arrived in the South on Wednesday.
The handwritten invitation to President Moon was delivered by Mr Kim's influential sister, Kim Yo-jong, at a landmark meeting in the presidential palace in Seoul, as the Games opened on Saturday.
"On a political level in Seoul, there is no wedge that can be driven between us by North Korea", Mattis said, echoing comments made by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.
Ms Kim and the North's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong-nam made up the most senior delegation from the North to visit the South since the Korean War in the 1950s. The rhetoric war between North Korea and the Trump administration hasn't skipped a beat in Pyeongchang. This would be the first summit between the two Koreas in over a decade.
