High-scoring Gophers roll past Penn State 101-68 in women's basketball

Penn State continues EIVA conference play Friday Feb. 16 in Rec Hall as the Nittany Lions take on Sacred Heart at 7 p.m. ET in main gym followed by a 4 p.m. ET matchup Saturday afternoon with Harvard in South Gym.

Entering play on Sunday, the Nittany Lions hold an overall record of 17-9, and have gone 7-6 in Big Ten play. "It's not going to happen overnight".

Forward Leron Black scored a game-high 18 points (6-10 FG). Earlier this season, they beat Penn State by 20 points.

Against Penn State it was an eight minute, 34 second scoring drought that started in the first half and went well into the second.

The Nittany Lions (18-9, 8-6 Big Ten) led by at least nine points the rest of the way. Brad Underwood said it's still too early to tell if he'll be able to play Wednesday's game at IN since he's IN concussion protocol. "When we went on that streak we weren't really running offense".

"We're a team right now that (makes) one mistake, and we hang our heads", Underwood said.

The Illini scored a season-low 16 points, and shot just 27.3 percent from the field, in the second half. The over/under total for the game is listed at 146.5 points. Garner's 3-pointer with 13:07 remaining upped the margin to 49-36. Sophomore guard Gadiva Hubbard led the way with 25 points.

IL also went scoreless over a 4:13 minute stretch midway through the first half, though it responded with a 7-0 run over a 2:25 minute-span, starting at the 5:20 minute mark in the first half. After a timeout, Mark Alstork stepped on the line trying to inbound it, another turnover.

She was a flawless 4-for-4 shooting in the first quarter, including 2-for-2 from three-point range. "So I just kept going with it".

The Lady Lions (14-12, 5-8) have lost four of their last five games.

The Nittany Lions won three of the five singles matches thanks to winning efforts by Gabby O'Gorman, Samantha Smith and Bennett Dunn.

IL is coming off a 78-69 loss at home to Wisconsin for its second straight loss. He has been Illinois' best player in conference play, and without a strong performance from him the Illini clearly struggled. He has 276 points this season and is now tied with Tom Hovasse at 1,459 career points. Finke is Illinois' third leading scorer and without him on the floor, the Illini definitely lacked in size and shooting.

This victory moved the Gophers up to fourth in the Big Ten, making the upcoming home games a tough battle.

Penn State returns home to face No. 14 Ohio State on Thursday.
