Lindsey Graham: Trump staff 'irrational' about immigration

Bash then pivoted to ask Graham whether it has really been worth it to have spent months buttering up the president when the president seems to have been the one who blew up a bipartisan immigration deal last week.

"There are people in the White House who are outliers", the South Carolina Republican said in an exclusive interview.

A closer look at opinions on different groups of immigrants to the US shows little public concern over an influx of people from some of the countries Trump reportedly maligned, although Trump voters were roughly twice as likely to say Africa sends too many immigrants than to say the same about Europe. "They always have, and if you follow that lead we'll never get anywhere".

A bipartisan group of senators on Wednesday formally unveiled their immigration proposal with new supporters - even as the White House continued to call the deal dead on arrival. Trump wrote, "I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians".

"On immigration, I've been dealing with it for about 10 years". "... I don't know where that guy went". The two men initially said publicly that they could not recall what the president said.

"I think the change comes about from people like Mr. Miller".

"The Democrats have to have leverage for the rest of the 11 million (undocumented immigrants)". When Trump and his allies say they want to end "chain migration" - in which family members sponsor other family members for entry - they mean they want to halt the influx of immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries.

Stephen Colbert on Tuesday roasted Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who earlier in the day told a panel of senators that she did not hear Trump use the word "shithole" to describe African nations during a White House meeting about immigration last week. Graham said that despite the remark, Trump is not a racist, but rather, reacts aggressively toward people who aren't nice to him.

Graham elaborated on this point, calling Trump a "street fighter" and that the president is just hitting back at his critics. "It's not the color of your skin that matters, it's not the content of your character, it's whether or not you show him respect or like him". "You could be the pope and criticize him, it doesn't matter, he'll go after the pope".

Just under half of the country, including three-quarters of Clinton voters and one-tenth of Trump voters, said that immigration was not too high from any of the countries or regions listed.

"I want to make sure that I can keep talking to the president", Graham said. Cory Booker, D-N.J., pounced on Nielsen for her convenient memory loss under oath and her attempt to "dismiss" questions about the episode.
