Oregon State women end Arizona State's win streak

14 January 2018

The Wildcats are undefeated at home this season entering the game with Oregon.

The Oregon Ducks (12-5) have split their last four games. OR had the ball stolen by Trier on the next play and was fouled on his layup attempt, hitting both free throws, which essentially sealed the game.

"He have enormous respect for them", Miller said. "We know it and see all the potential".

"Teams are slowing the game down against us, really taking their time on offense, having really long possessions, and everybody has been playing match-up zone", Trier said.

Pinder knows that his main role on this year's team is to provide a spark on the defensive end, and to make a few offensive plays where they present themselves.

In the first half, the teams were tied nine times and the lead changed hands 15 times before PSU went to the locker room on top, 48-42.

Arizona had to rely on its regular contributors Saturday as Allonzo Trier and Deandre Ayton led the way one more time this season with 25 and 24 points, respectively, in the win.

ASU finished with a big edge at the free-throw line, making 16 of 22 to OSU's 6 of 9.

The Wildcats started the game 0-4 from deep and let Oregon State take a 9-2 lead by the first media timeout.

Malachi Flynn added 14 points along with a solid performance from Drick Bernstine who played facilitator scoring 10 points with six rebounds and nine assists.

Arizona shot 38 percent from the floor and 2-for-11 from 3-point range while OSU shot 34 percent and hit 2-of-7 from deep. He had only his second double-double of the year vs. ASU, posting 12 points and 13 rebounds. After Ristic found himself in some early foul trouble and with OR going a bit small, Miller turned to senior and sometimes seldom-used power forward Keanu Pinder for some important minutes.

Stanford had double-digit leads in both halves, including a 13-point lead with 8:40 remaining after Okpala's two-handed dunk down the lane. Alkins said the team wouldn't have been able to win without the senior from Australia, but the team still has some work to do to get its bench where it needs to be.

"You can practice, prepare", Miller said, "but until you get in the game you don't realize the size they have, how well they communicate".

OR should improve on its best-ever No. 8 ranking after midweek losses by No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 6 Tennessee and No. 7 Texas if it beats No. 18 Arizona State for its ninth consecutive win. "... Our bench is continuing to develop, but Keanu gave us tremendous minutes on defense. They are fearless and they play hard ... we rose to the challenge".

This was a game where you wouldn't have blamed Arizona coach Sean Miller if he would have sweated through his shirt. "He did it when we had to have him because of our foul trouble ... that's not his greatest strength, but we'll take it". They have won 79 of 81 games going back to the 2012 season.

MiKyle McIntosh, a senior grad transfer from Illinois State, is the Ducks' most experienced player in the frontcourt, and his leadership is needed if OR is to make run toward a tournament berth. "I think we will start clicking better throughout the next games". "I couldn't remember where I was".
