But when the Columbus, Ohio, native got off the bench, he was in a zone. The Blue Devils went 4-3 with Capel running the show. But with the chance to improve past a.500 record in conference play, two Duke players-Trent and reserve guard Alex O'Connell-proved they have the potential to be sharpshooting weapons for the Blue Devils as they barrel through ACC play.
"Anytime we make shots from the perimiet it's big for us, because we have two guys inside that are really good, very efficient and can get a whole team in foul trouble", said Capel, who has now won a game as Duke's acting head coach three years in a row. That's the main thing.
"To have somebody like that on your team, who's throwing up on the bench on the side, not feeling too good, to have somebody like that come out and still play the way he did and give everything he had, that's just fantastic", Bagley said.
As a freshman in 2015, his first game of big production came with a 27-point outing in late February against the Demon Deacons. He missed most of the second half of the 1994-95 season after complications from another back operation.
With 6:35 remaining, Duke fans got a bit of a scare when Bagley remained on the floor in pain after getting hit in the face by a Wake Forest defender while attacking the basket.
But the Blue Devils' defense, which had been a sticking point for Krzyzewski earlier in the week, clamped down and eventually held Wake Forest to just 36 percent from the field.
But Trent was not alone. His previous high of 10 came in the Blue Devils' win over Furman on November 20. Although O'Connell scored just one more point after the break, the freshman guard contributed a career-high 13 points in just 15 minutes on the court.
"I think all of us need to get better". "Gary wasn't feeling too well today but he played his butt off, so I was ready to play today and I did a good job helping the team".
Duke: Playing without Coach K isn't exactly a new phenomenon for the Blue Devils - this is the third straight season in which the 70-year-old has missed at least one game due to health reasons - but now the issue becomes the length of his absence and the severity of his sickness, especially with Duke facing a quick turnaround with a game Monday night at No. 18 Miami. He sank 2 of 3 3-point attempts and all four of his free throws in the first half, quickly establishing himself as a deep threat.
But if Trent and O'Connell can keep their consistency from long range, Duke boasts a roster that can be risky everywhere on the court. Overall, the Blue Devils have won the last six meetings in the series.
"Great win for our guys in the midst of this adversity with coach being out", Capel said. "I don't know about anybody else, but we've been putting sanitizer on every time we come into the locker room and just trying to keep everybody healthy", Bagley said.
