Chevrolet Silverado Unveiled, Drops 450 Pounds And Gains A Diesel Engine

14 January 2018

An eight-strong line-up, spanning work-focused through to performance, with premium features and advanced driver-assistance along the way, it's Chevy's retort to the F-150 and the product of more than 7m miles of testing by the time it arrives in dealerships.

The all-new 2019 Silverado High Country interior features more passenger room, more storage space and more functionality - all the things that customers were clear they want.

Designers and engineers paid particular attention to aerodynamics for better fuel economy, GM said.

"Developing an all-new structure gave us an opportunity to examine the proportions of the truck", Mike Simcoe, VP of global design, says.

As for size, the truck is also bigger than the current version.

The 2019 Silverado's bed starts with a foundation of the roll-formed steel Chevrolet has touted in commercials for years, now upgraded for double strength. The shape of the front end has been improved to duct air around the tires, while the shape of the roof and the shape of the tailgate have been created to move air smoothly over the bed.

Under its skin, the pickup uses more high-strength steel in its ladder frame for weight savings and a 10-percent stiffer body. All of the 2019 Silverado's swing panels are constructed of aluminum including the hood, doors, and tailgate, straying from the former steel architecture that still exists in the fenders and roof. Carbon-composite second-stage rear springs save 24 pounds versus the current truck's steel springs.

As for the bed, there Chevrolet has some fighting talk for Ford. The bed floor has been widened by seven inches and there are new lockable cargo boxes on some models. Cargo volume increased by 20 percent compared with the outgoing model and there are 21 tie-downs.

There's even an optional power tailgate that can be operated from a button on the key fob, a button in the cab, or a button on the tailgate itself.

The Silverado 1500, Chevrolet's best-selling vehicle, is getting a complete redesign for 2019.

Six engine/transmission combinations will be available, including new 5.3L and 6.2L V8s with fuel management systems that can shut off gasoline to any number of cylinders, and industry first. For the 2019 model year, there'll be eight Silverado models, in fact. The Custom Trailboss (new for 2019) adds the Z71 Off Road Package with a locking rear differential, skid plates, Rancho shocks, 18-inch wheels and Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires.

That's because tonight marked the launch of the all-new, 2019 Chevrolet Silverado.

The 3.0L diesel I-6 and 6.2L gasoline V8 are both paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission. Inside, there'll be Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, wireless charging for your smartphone, and the option of 4G LTE with a WiFi hotspot.

The 2019 Silverado made its official debut at the Detroit auto show after an early introduction at an event celebrating Chevy Truck's 100th anniversary in November 2017 in Texas.
