Trump suggests he's developed a positive relationship with Kim Jong

The satellite images were published shortly after the two Koreas - North and South - held their first historic meeting in two years, which concluded with both countries' showing signs of reducing regional tension, after a year of Pyongyang's continuous weapons tests and US President Donald Trump's hostile remarks towards North Korea. In his New Year's address last week, Kim said he has a "nuclear button" that could fire weapons anywhere in the United States, and Trump responded that he has a much bigger and more powerful "nuclear button". The two nations have remained in a state of war and without diplomatic relations since the Korean War ended in 1953 without a peace treaty.

Direct talks between the USA president and Kim would be unprecedented.

In October, Japan's Asahi TV reported that as many as 200 North Korean workers may have been killed in a tunnel collapse at the nuclear test site.

The officials said McMaster has argued that if China were assured that a strike would be limited to one target and not the beginning of a campaign to overthrow Kim, an all-out war could be avoided.

A White House statement said the two leaders discussed Macron's recent visit to China and committed to continue to apply pressure on North Korea. "I hope that doesn't happen", Haley said.

Trump said the stop-and-go nature to his strategy with North Korea is intentional and part of a broader goal.

Kim has warned the United States that he intends to build a nuclear arsenal capable of hitting the United States, prompting threats of military action by Washington.

A Japanese ruling party lawmaker said he did not believe the Korean talks could narrow the gap between North Korea's demand for recognition as a nuclear-armed state and the USA refusal to accept that.
