Oprah Winfrey "intrigued by the idea" of Running for US President

13 January 2018

"I'll beat Oprah", the president declared flatly at a White House meeting Tuesday - though he quickly added, "I don't think she's going to run".

The host of the Golden Globes, late-night comedian Seth Meyers, jokingly urged Winfrey to run in his opening monologue, noting that President Donald Trump had reportedly decided to make his bid for the office after he was the butt of Meyers's jokes at the White House Correspondents Dinner in 2011.

Just before 10 p.m., when her dad, the president, was still watching the college football championship game in Atlanta, Ivanka tweeted her support for Winfrey's message.

Oprah Winfrey has done some pretty awesome things during her career, whether she's giving away cars to a whole studio full of people, or raising loads of money for charity. "She would absolutely do it".

The speech, which received a standing ovation, prompted several tweets urging the television host to consider standing for president.

"I like Oprah", he said, noting that he had appeared on her long-running afternoon program. I've been on her show ...

Twitter account @girlsreallyrule pointed out to Ivanka that Trump was one of the men that Oprah was talking about in her speech.

"She could hold a front against hatred in this country".

If the speculation is wishful thinking, Winfrey's fame and wealth, extraordinary personal story overcoming poverty, teenage rape and pregnancy to build a $2.6 billion fortune and Oscar-nominated acting career, would stack up nicely in her favor.

Winfrey's impassioned speech Sunday night at the Golden Globes sparked talk about whether she might follow in the footsteps of another wildly wealthy media star who jumped into politics by campaigning for the highest office in the land, Donald Trump.

In an interview with Bloomberg TV that same month, she hinted that Trump's lack of government experience, had recalibrated her own thoughts. "I know it's hard but #TIMESUP for your dad too".

In a tweet posted Monday, Jan. 8, President Donald Trump's daughter posted in support of O and the whole #TimesUp movement. "I value the press more than ever before". "She can do it - in theory". "So this is, for my mom", she added.

Seth Meyers, the host for the ceremony, tackled the Hollywood sexual harassment scandal head on, which kicked off by throwing himself into a 15-minute long monologue in which he directly mentioned disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein in a joke that drew gasps from the audience.

'It is not lost on me that, at this moment, there is some little girl watching as I become the first black woman to be given the same award, ' Oprah said.

She expressed gratitude for Taylor and all the women who were silenced when they spoke their truth to powerful men, the women who worked in factories, farms, as domestic workers and in academia, whose names will never be known.
