Hospital patients need blood. Where are the donors?

12 January 2018

"There's a ripple effect through the nation's blood supply system when an entire area is shut down for blood drives".

January is National Blood Donor Month and the ARC has an urgent need for donations of all blood type, because severe winter weather has cancelled more than 150 blood drives across the country.

"It is especially important for residents to give blood in the winter months, when supplies and donations tend to decrease", said Frank Marchegiani, Rowley's coordinator of health services.

The Red Cross is looking for people to donate all blood types. In Indiana, the Red Cross has seen a shortfall of more than 1,400 blood donations.

He added that eligible blood and platelet donors can schedule a donation by using the Red Cross Blood Donor app, visiting redcrossblood.org, or calling 800-733-2767.

According to the nonprofit's CEO, Ana Montero, since January 1 volunteers responded to more than 35 fires in the state and helped 260 people from 92 families. Curtis Karpen came in early to donate double-reds.

Make sure that everyone in the family knows how to get out of every room and how to get out of the home in less than two minutes.

Stanford Blood Center says they are seeking donations for any type of blood.

Platelet donation takes a little longer than a regular blood donation. Your blood is drawn, then spinned in a centriguge until the platelets rise to the top.

On Jan. 6, the Town of West Springfield hosted a community blood drive at the Unico building to help spread the word that more blood is needed. "Of the 38 percent I just mentioned, only eight percent of them actually do donate regularly, so a fraction of the population is providing the blood for everybody else".

In September, 90 pints of blood were collected over the four days of the blood drive, during which the Sonora City Fire Department beat out the Sonora Police Department.
