French league suspends goalline technology after two cock-ups in cup

12 January 2018

Ligue 1 and the French League Cup will be directly affected by the restrictions as the LFP give GoalControl some time to fix their technical issues.

But the system failed to signal a goal in Paris Saint-Germain's win at Amiens, as well as on another occasion during the quarter-final tie between Angers and Montpellier.

GoalControl - which has been used in France since 2015 - had already been warned last month following errors earlier in the season, and the LFP confirmed the suspension on Thursday, saying its board will meet next week to discuss it.

FRANCE has stopped using goalline technology after a pair of cock-ups in cup matches.

The decision will be applicable to all the competitions and leagues that come under LFP, including the top-flight Ligue 1 and the League Cup.

The goal line is also used in assisting the referee in awarding a goal or not.

"Unfortunately, the GLT experienced two serious malfunctions in the Amiens-PSG match", LFP director general Didier Quillot said.

"These two irregularities are unacceptable, especially as they occur just after we put GoalControl on notice", he said, adding that the system in its current state "was not reliable".

GoalControl was used at the 2014 World Cup, but the Premier League, Bundesliga and Serie A all use Hawk-Eye's technology.
