Post Bryan Singer's firing, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' gets new director

08 December 2017

Singer stated that his absence was due to a gravely ill parent and that the studio refused to let him take care of their (or his own) health.

Said Singer in the statement: "Bohemian Rhapsody is a passion project of mine. This was not my decision and it was beyond my control".

"I wanted nothing more than to be able to finish this project and help honor the legacy of Freddie Mercury and Queen, but Fox would not permit me to do so because I needed to temporarily put my health, and the health of my loved ones, first".

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Singer and actor Rami Malek - who is playing Mercury in the film - had an increasingly uneasy working relationship.

The director made the statement Monday evening through his attorney Andrew B. Brettler, several hours after Fox announced that he'd been terminated.

While they successfully settled their differences, as Singer claimed in his statement, the director tested Malek and the studio's patience once more by his no-show after Thanksgiving, which led to his firing.

Singer had been absent from the set a few times, and 20th Century Fox finally took the step of terminating his involvement in the movie after he failed to return following the Thanksgiving break. A new director has not been named.

The troubled production of Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody has taken another turn, hopefully this time for the better. Denis O'Sullivan, Arnon Milchan, and Jane Rosenthal are the executive producers.

However, Singer's lengthy absence created problems during production. Sources said Malek had complained about what he perceived as Singer's lack of professionalism. Although the two made up and filming was expected to continue afterwards, Singer hasn't returned to the set since. "Bryan hopes to get back to work on the film soon after the holidays".

Fletcher, whose directorial work includes the musical Sunshine on Leith and last year's Eddie the Eagle, will direct the remaining two weeks of shooting and orchestrate the film's post-production work, which may involve further reshoots. A man who claims he was sexually abused by the "X-Men" franchise director Singer said Thursday, April 17, 2014, that he reported the molestation to authorities at the time, and does not know why charges were never pursued.
