Two dozen US stealth fighter jets took part in the drills, six of them F-22s, six of them F-35As, as well as a dozen F-35Bs, marking the first time the highly-advanced jets have cruised the skies above Korea at the same time.

"Through the exercise, the South Korean and USA air forces have demonstrated the alliance's strong will and capability for strong retaliation against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats", the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

The bombing was part of passing in South Korea jointly with the U.S. large-scale maneuvers of the air force Vigilant ACE 18.

The B-1B Lancer strategic bomber and F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets joined South Korean aircraft for the drill at the Pilsung Firing Range, part of a massive five-day exercise that began Monday.

North Korea says war is now inevitable between Washington and Pyongyang.

The drills, which will end Friday, include simulated attacks on a "a mock North Korean missile launch site with mock North Korean radars", CNN reported, citing a South Korean official.

"Should the USA miscalculate our patience and light the fuse for a nuclear war, we will surely make the USA dearly pay the consequences with our mighty nuclear force which we have consistently strengthened".

"We hope all relevant parties can maintain calm and restraint and take steps to alleviate tensions and not provoke each other", he said.

This handout taken and released by the South Korean Defence Ministry in Seoul on December 6, 2017 shows a US Air Force B-1B Lancer bomber, two US F-35A and two US F-35B stealth jets flying over South Korea with South Korea's two F-16 and two F-15K fighter jets during a joint military drill. The U.N. did not offer detail as to the subject of the talks, but Feltman is expected to also meet foreign minister Ri and U.N. staff based in the country, the Associated Press reported.

"Through the drill, the South Korean and USA air forces displayed the allies" strong intent and ability to punish North Korea when threatened by nuclear weapons and missiles, ' the South Korean military said in a statement.

North Korea's state media confirmed the arrival of Mr Feltman and his entourage late on Tuesday without offering more details, later issuing a photograph of him and two members of his team.

U.S. national security adviser H.R. McMaster said at the weekend the possibility of war was "increasing every day". "The outbreak of war is not in any side's interest".

The US-South Korea drills coincide with a rare visit to the North by United Nations political affairs chief Jeffrey Feltman.

"Through the drill, the South Korean and United States air forces displayed the allies' strong intent and ability to punish North Korea when threatened by nuclear weapons and missiles", the South Korean military said in a statement.
