Apple Pay Cash now allows USA users to send money with iMessages

Apple customers who have not set up Apple Pay up on their supported device can still receive money, according to Apple.

During the setup process, you might be asked to verify your identity, which can include a combination of entering in your address, date of birth, social security number, or possibly even taking a photo of your drivers license.

But in case you're not quite sure how to get started, Apple has published a short how-to video on its YouTube channel.

After receiving a payment, you can transfer the money to your bank account.

WatchOS 4.0.1 can be downloaded through the dedicated Apple Watch app on the iPhone by going to General Software Update. In 2015 Apple rebranded its Passbook feature as Wallet, and in the latest iteration, consumers can tap their screen or go into settings to change the default card for Apple Pay purchases, cycling easily between a credit, debit or prepaid card, or the Apple Pay Cash account.

Apple Pay Cash allows users to send and receive money through iMessage conversations using the Messages app. Cash is sent from a linked debit or credit card, according to Apple. The biggest advantage of Venmo, PayPal, and Facebook Payments, however, is that they're platform-independent-with any of them, you can send money to anyone, regardless of the operating system they use. For sending this dollar, I paid a 3 percent fee (the same as with Venmo and other services), but that's because the payment was via credit card.

Money received in a transaction is added automatically to an Apple Pay Cash card that resides in Wallet.

Once the payment has been sent to the recipient, it will be marked as "Pending" until it is accepted by the recipient.

Should You Pay the Apple Way?

You'll need to add your bank account details first, so tap on "Add Bank Account". Then hit "Next" in the top-right corner.

The connection between banks and Apple Pay has been uneasy at times, and the introduction this week of Apple Pay Cash does little to assuage concerns about how far the tech giant's tentacles may eventually extend into commerce.

Again, while you can transfer your Apple Pay Cash balance to your bank account, you can also spend it straight from your iPhone. If you have a MacBook with Touch ID, you can use Apple Pay Cash, or you can connect an older Mac to your iPhone and pay that way.
