"In 2016, The Indianapolis Star spent months digging into the pattern of sexual abuse at USA Gymnastics, the largest US gymnastics organization and the national governing body for the sport. Because the national team training camps did not allow parents to be present, my mom and dad were unable to observe what Nassar was doing". "As it turns out, much to my demise, Dr. Nassar was not a doctor, he in fact is, was, and forever shall be, a child molester, and a monster of a human being".
Larry Nassar, the former MSU and USA Gymnastics doctor whose work took him to multiple Olympic games, was sentenced Thursday to 60 years in federal prison on child pornography charges to which he's admitted.
U.S. Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman also filed a complaint. Maroney reportedly meant to read her letter out loud for the court before Nassar's sentencing but instead made a decision to sent her account directly to the MI judge who will be sentencing Nassar on Thursday. My husband once questioned the propriety of the isolation of the girls during global travel. 'More safe than the President of the US, ' he said to him.
One of the most disturbing accounts, described in letters by both women, occurred when Maroney competed in the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo, aged 15. "He'd given me a sleeping pill for the flight, and the next thing I know, I was all alone with him in his hotel room getting a 'treatment.' I thought I was going to die that night", she wrote.
"I can not tell you the anguish her Dad and I feel and the responsibility we feel for not being aware of this or being able to stop it".
Maroney won team gold and an individual vault silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. USA Gymnastics sent him to nearly every summer Olympic Games, from 1996 in Atlanta - where he was photographed in the iconic image of an injured Kerri Strug being helped off a platform - to London in 2012.
"In the course of that broader investigation, they spoke to two gymnasts who accused Nassar - a powerful, prominent figure within the gymnastics world - of sexual abuse".
"She was transformed from a bubbly, positive, loving, world-class athlete into a young adult who was deeply depressed, at times suicidal", Erin Maroney wrote. "At times, I was unsure whether I would open her bedroom door and find her dead".
Erin Maroney also detailed one graphic incident. Earlier this year, Steve Penny resigned as chief executive of USA Gymnastics after acknowledging he had waited five weeks to report Nassar to law enforcement in 2015, and Michigan State gymnastics coach Kathie Klages retired after the university suspended her for defending Nassar in a private meeting with her gymnasts.
Nassar's sentencing could receive a minimum of 27 years in prison but in recent court filings, prosecutor's have asked the court to impose a 60-year sentence.
Nassar is accused of sexual assaulting more than 140 women and girls, some of them hundreds of times, attorney's representing the victims said.
"Larry Nassar deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison".
