Android Oreo update for OnePlus 5 might bring along Face Unlock feature

26 November 2017

There is no Face Unlock feature in this Oreo build, but a leaked build of the Oreo beta 2 seems to contain the Face Unlock support.

According to some reports, OnePlus 5's Face Unlock will behave in the same was as the OnePlus 5T did. So, now OnePlus 5 owners will get this feature in latest Android 8.0 Oreo beta. With Face Unlock enabled, a user simply has to look at the phone's camera to unlock the phone.

Good thing is that, there is no special hardware at work, since it relies entirely on software only. I'm looking at you, iPhone X. For that reason, OnePlus has indicated that Face Unlock should not be used for authenticating payments.

It also needs to be said that Face Unlock has worked much faster than numerous other devices we've tested, and at least it isn't the only security option available. Mostly this was because the Oneplus 5T launched with the 18:9 aspect ratio display, which is now the industry norm while the OnePlus 5 had thick bezels on the top and bottom. It's the company's fastest-selling smartphone ever and reviews have been generally very positive.

The Android Oreo beta update for the OnePlus 5 is slated to roll out by the end of this month, hence, we will know more whether Face Unlock feature actually made it to OnePlus 5 or not through the beta update.

The update comes as OxygenOS Open Beta 1 for the OnePlus 5.

OnePlus 5 owners, we hope that you've got some free time in your schedule this weekend, because there's a notable beta update now available for your phone.

As for what's included in the update, there are new Android Oreo features like picture-in-picture, auto-fill, and a new Quick Settings design.
