Arsenal poach Sven Mislintat from Dortmund as new head of recruitment

20 November 2017

We reported last week that the German is highly respected and credited with numerous Bundesliga side's stellar signings in recent years including Robert Lewandowski, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ousmane Dembele.

Mislintat is expected to join Arsenal this calendar year, with the Gunners paying a fee of between €1-2 million to Dortmund, where he is under contract until 2021.

Arsenal's chief scout Steve Rowley has stood down, but will continue to work with the club on a consultancy basis.

According to Arsenal, Mislintat will work closely with Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis, "plus other coaches, the background analytics team and our global scouting network".

"Sven Mislintat was my closest colleague for 10 years", Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said in a club release.

Mislintat, nicknamed "Diamond Eye" because of his eye for talent, played a key role in identifying the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Robert Lewandowski, Shinji Kagawa, Ousmane Dembele and many more for BVB, who won back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2011 and 2012 and made the UEFA Champions League final the following year.

The Gunners are said to be looking to modernize their approach to transfers, and Mislintat has been identified as the ideal man to begin the process.

"We are delighted that Sven is joining us", he told the club's official website. This includes the use of data analysis - an approach Arsenal have utilised in their own recruitment process using USA based analytics company StatDNA. "We wish him well for the future".

Wenger added: "We would like to thank Steve Rowley for all his hard work over many years for the club".
