Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters traveling with Trump in Asia that the president believes a "mere allegation" - especially one from many years ago - shouldn't be allowed to destroy a person's life.
The Washington Post reported that three other women interviewed in recent weeks say "Moore pursued them when they were between the ages of 16 and 18 and he was in his early 30s, episodes they say they found flattering at the time, but troubling as they got older".
Donald Trump has said he believes a Republican Senate candidate in the United States will "step aside" if allegations about the GOP hopeful are true. Remember, Trump admitted to sexual assault and was elected president.
"My gosh, it's The Washington Post!" exclaimed Alabama's Republican National Committeeman Paul Reynolds. Luther StrangeLuther Johnson StrangeThe establishment must answer to the voters or face more challenges Moore won't say if he wants McConnell ousted as leader Moore makes nice with Senate Republicans in trip to Capitol Hill MORE in a run-off to become the GOP nominee to fill the seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Session.
"The Obama-Clinton Machine's liberal media lapdogs just launched the most vicious and nasty round of attacks against me I've EVER faced".
The three other women said that they never had any sexual contact with Moore outside of kissing.
Alone with Corfman, Moore chatted with her and asked for her phone number, she says.
Moore's name can not be removed from the ballot before the December 12 special election even if he withdraws from the race, according to John Bennett, a spokesman for the Alabama secretary of state.
"If that's true, I don't believe there'd be any place for him in the United States Senate", he said.
Moore, even before The Post story on Thursday, was going to be a problem that McConnell and the rest of the governing wing of the Republican Party in Washington was going to have to deal with.
So rest assured - I will NEVER GIVE UP the fight!
According to Alabama law, it's too late for the GOP to nominate another candidate. Oh yeah. There's also that one guy who said everything was cool because of the Virgin Mary or something. And words from people who Moore ran aggressively against during his primary and runoff wins over appointed Republican Sen. Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter.
Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler, a Republican, dismissed the charges brought forth in a Washington Post article about Moore Thursday, telling The Washington Examiner that the relationship would be akin to that of Joseph and Mary. If the margin narrows, it becomes even more hard for them to pass controversial legislation unless there is unanimity within GOP ranks.
This was then followed by Moore using recent sexual abuse allegations to support fundraising efforts for his campaign.
The most damaging allegation against Moore, who first came to national prominence after he was removed from the position of chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court in 2001 for refusing to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments commissioned by him from the Alabama Judicial Building, comes from Leigh Corfman.
