Woman accused of killing ferret by placing it in hot oven

Authorities said they were called around 3 a.m. about reports of smoke in the building. James Clifford added, "All my friends have cats and dogs".

Two people who rented the apartment told police a woman who was staying with them had already left and was standing outside the apartment building with other tenants. Murray added Clifford fleeing the building and the area after the smoke alarm going off.

After having spoken with the owners of the ferret, the officers had "gathered enough probable cause to arrest Clifford who was charged with one count animal cruelty", police said. She is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday. Murray told WHDH that Angel nipping Clifford's foot had been the final straw.

Judge Gillian Abramson told Clifford, "These allegations display a profound sense of sadism".

With tears running down her face, a grief-stricken Murray told reporters that knowing her cherished 2-year-old female ferret, Angel, suffered such a awful death was too much for her and her boyfriend to bear. That is of deep concern to this court.

Clifford now remains held in custody on $10,000 bail. "I will not release her to the Elliot or Catholic Medical Center".

Clifford's lawyer, Callan Maynard, reported CBS Boston, said, Clifford's husband was 'very concerned for her health and her welfare, and being incarcerated because she is 32 weeks pregnant, your honor'. It's disturbing. It's emotional.

When fire fighters arrived at the evacuated apartment, they found the source of the smoke: Inside the apartment's oven was a "burnt item", WHDH reports - and that "item" was a 2-year-old ferret named Angel, which belonged to Cara Murray, who lived at the apartment with her boyfriend, James Klimavich.

"She nips. She's a baby", Murray told NH1.
