"If we pick a player, we will give him a long run".

While 23-year-old Siraj, who first came into prominence for Sunrisers Hyderabad, came up with some impressive performances for India A during a recent tour of South Africa and matches against New Zealand.

The Indian selectors chose to bring in Shreyas Iyer and Mohammed Siraj for the T20I series against New Zealand.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has also been retained after being picked in the ongoing ODI series earlier this month. As expected, Virat Kohli will lead the team and Ashish Nehra will be a part of the squad only for the first T20I against the Kiwis as he retires at the Ferozeshah Kotla.

The first Test will be played in Kolkata from November 16-20 while Nagpur will host the second Test from November 24-28. He was also part of the South Africa A tour where he also claimed 10 wickets.

The 22-year-old Iyer has been a consistent performer for his home state Mumbai and India A during the past one year.

However, Prasad made it clear that there has been clear communication with Nehra with regards to how they are looking at the future.

A couple of worldwide matches ahead of a home series against Sri Lanka would have been ideal preparation while also affording some rest to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has been playing non-stop all-year long.

However, there were a few players who were unlucky to not make the cut and feature in what would Ashish Nehra's farewell series.

"Iyer has been prolific across formats - in first-class, one-dayers, T20 - he's been performing consistently", MSK Prasad, India's chairman of selectors, said. The left-arm veteran pacer has been picked only for the Delhi match.

Test Squad (2 matches): Virat Kohli (captain), KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandra Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Mohamed Shami, Unmesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma.
