Cub Scout packs can include any combination of all boy or all girl dens.
While Cub Scouts will feature gender specific dens, it's unclear how Boy Scout groups will integrate female troop members moving forward.
He added that he hopes the organization will remove the word "Boy" from its name, and simply be called "Scouts of America". Numerous research studies and countless testimonials clearly recognize that participation in Girl Scout programming has proven highly effective in enhancing leadership qualities - as well as other key indicators of success - for the girls involved.
According to the Boy Scouts of America 2016 Annual Report, there were 1,262,311 boys in Cub Scouts across the country.
But Soto-Harmon believes there is a misconception about what is available in the Girl Scouts.
Joy Wheeler, the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri, said the Boy Scouts' decision to welcome girls could negatively impact their recruitment efforts in the future, but she believes their program is still appealing because it was made for girls, by girls. "A lot of times what we've seen is a Boy Scout comes on a trip or a campout and their sister comes along and they haven't had the same opportunities", Jones said.
The new challenge from the Boy Scouts is only the latest in a string of difficulties faced by the Girl Scouts over the past 15 years. Troops are girl-led and girl-focused, from troop meetings, cookie sales and camping to STEM programming and more.

While the Eagle Scout award is the highest Boy Scout honor, the Girl Scouts can earn their gold award.
