Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe: Frankie Dettori breaks record on Enable

01 October 2017

Enable has drifted a little in the Arc betting this morning and can be backed as 11-10 with several firms, but it is now 10-1 bar the favourite - the price on offer about both Order Of St George and Winter - while Ulysses, the second-favourite yesterday, is out to 11-1. She was timed in a good 2:28.69 for the 1 1/2 miles over soft ground. She is now favourite with the bookies to beat five opponents, while her stable companion Magical is joint-favourite for the fillies-only Marcel Boussac, which opens the card at 1.10pm. The last Arc-winning colt trained in France, meanwhile, was Rail Link in 2006, so where have all their top-class mile-and-a-half male horses gone? "She's an absolute freak".

Enable, victor of the Oaks at Epsom, the Curragh and York and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, is the mount of Frankie Dettori, who is aiming to capture a record fifth Arc. "She was very well positioned by Frankie to show her brilliance and ability". Owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah won the Arc for the fifth time. He bred the mother and for his farm to produce something like this is exciting for us all.

"I think it would be wrong to run her again this year", he added. I think to go to the Breeders' Cup would be wrong, too hard on the filly. She is weighing more now than she did at the beginning of the year, which is a good sign.

"I was very confident all week". Since his first mount - pacemaker Roushayd in 1988 - finished 20th of 24 starters, the Italian has only missed one running, in 2013, when he broke his ankle in a fall at Nottingham four days before the race.

"She's very special and has awesome ability", he said.

After tracking Bengala, Enable went about her business halfway up the straight and passed the post five and a half lengths clear of Rain Goddess in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh. Only third as the even-money favourite for the G2 Prix Dollar at this meeting 12 months ago and last of five in the May 28 G1 Prix d'Ispahan when the surface was on the quick side, the homebred has enjoyed a spin here in recent days to help his acclimatisation. There would be every reason to keep her in training next year as a four-year-old, particularly with the new Longchamp opening. By the 2009 Arc hero, the bay is drawn two out from his relative Ulysses (Ire) (Galileo ) and his trainer is convinced he will put up a bold show. She's exceptionally good. She quickens and she stays well. He's pretty good for an old jock! Questions will - or should - be asked if they are blown away again this afternoon.

Enable has an unusual pedigree, with close inbreeding of 2×3 to Sadler‟s Wells: whilst Thoroughbred breeding has been ordinated more and more towards speed, that of Enable is to stamina.

Enable is a 3-year-old Juddmonte Farms homebred daughter of Nathaniel, out of the Sadler's Wells mare Concentric. Cloth Of Stars is a Group One victor, but finished eighth on his only start over this trip. Apogée, the second dam, won the Prix de Royaumont (Group 3).
