Pep Guardiola urges caution in the deification of free-scoring Manchester City

25 September 2017

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is not distracted by the club's impressive start to the English Premier League season and hopes his players will follow suit.

City became the first English top-flight side since Blackburn Rovers in 1958-59 to win three-successive games by five goals or more when cruising past Crystal Palace at the weekend, but Guardiola insists that it is too soon to compare his current crop to former sides Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

The 35-year-old has taken a self-imposed break from football in an attempt to clear his name of any wrongdoing and will not travel with the rest of the Shakhtar Donetsk squad to Manchester on matchday two in the Champions League group stage.

PEP GUARDIOLA is praying history does not repeat itself as he looks to continue Manchester City's outstanding start. "I don't have players here I have in the past".

"I don't have players [here] I have in the past".

"It is hard for me to compare". Here we didn't win anything.

"The brilliant style and all these kind of things only I can talk about that and I defend 100 per cent what I'm talking about". Against Monaco, in 180 minutes we are out because we played bad for 45 minutes. "I know I'm one of the five on the players council". It's just September, it's game by game and we focus on all competitions now. It's easy. We're winning. When [you're] winning, it's easier and all you [the media] are looking at and observing and saying that's good, that's good is because we are winning.

"All we have to do is keep going".

"That is the secret". City are dominating the possession stats and once they find a way through and get a lead they have been devestating in dismantling teams who come out and try to play against their superior passing game.

The City boss was at pains to warn his team against the danger of underestimating Tuesday's opponents from the Ukraine.

"Every time I play Shakhtar, I have the same feeling", added the Spaniard. "Not being serious. Shakhtar Donetsk from my experience deserve all the credit". They have spoken with [agent] Patrick (de Koster) in the summer: and said give us time to make the transfers and we speak after the summer.
