Giants' Jason Pierre-Paul: Eagles game is a 'must-win'

24 September 2017

The reason that solution won't be easy is that the Philadelphia Eagles stand in the G-Men's path.

The Giants (0-2) have scored just 13 points in losses to the Cowboys and the Lions, neither of which have been accused of playoff defense. It would also help the confidence of the team after a tough loss in Kansas City.

A win Sunday moves the Eagles to 2-1 on the season. He's more comfortable in the Eagles' offensive system, understands what opposing defenses are looking to throw at him now.

"They're all must-win games", center Weston Richburg said.

Meanwhile, the Giants are reeling, especially on offense.

On paper, things look good.

It doesn't mean the offensive line will look exactly the same as it did when the Giants trotted out their starters Week 1 and 2, and used the same lineup that struggled most of last season. "I'm going to go out there and battle", Pugh said. He came up with this gem about Sunday's game in Philadelphia. Eli Manning and Philadelphia's Carson Wentz have each been sacked an NFC-high eight times. It is insane how different those situations are.

The Giants need a top sportsbook performance this Sunday. Yet there is no denying McAdoo's role in his team's listless start, starting with his failure to get more out of what was supposed to be a much-improved offense. "A lot of people are counting us out, and so be it". They won't care about statistics or trends or rankings. The Giants will come out scratching and clawing to keep from having two divisional losses this early in the season.

The good news is that the Eagles aren't likely to be overconfident. "There is no fear in my heart about being 0-2".

And the Giants' consistently answering that this is as important as any other game, and the season won't end if they lose.

"He takes ownership of this team", Agholor said. The defensive line will need to come up big. Fletcher Cox and Tim Jernigan were excellent last week at bringing pressure up the middle. They were 6-10 again and Coughlin was sacked. Jernigan will be a tough test for a guy making his second ever National Football League start. They have Brandon Graham, Vinny Curry and Chris Long off the edges.

In other words, if Manning and his mates are going to get their season turned around, this would not appear to be the matchup to do it. Corey Graham and Jaylen Watkins will be out on Sunday.

The Eagles' list of ailing safeties is a real concern. That's challenging when you face Sterling Shepard, Evan Engram, and Beckham, an athletic trio of pass-catchers. "It's not going to be one guy that'll do it". The Eagles have suddenly racked up a bunch of injuries to their defensive backs.

Wide receiver Nelson Agholor: "I think that I'm always just amazed at his discipline and his consistency". And, while Jenkins is returning this week from ankle and hand injuries, in 2016 he allowed the seventh-lowest passer rating in coverage (64.8), according to Pro Football Focus. "And then they were able to sign Josh, and that was kind of the end of that".

So, this is not necessarily the best place for the Giants to figure out what has gone wrong the first two weeks. They will be aggressive and challenge you to burn them. Communication will be critical to making sure everyone is on the same page. Pederson says he will change his ways. The offensive line struggled for the second straight game, especially left guard Isaac Seumalo. Warmack is regarded as the better run-blocker of the two. He hasn't been on the field since the preseason but is a veteran player who should be fine if given the chance to play. The New York Giants have lost five of their last eight road games.

They can't run the ball (48.5 yards per game).

Giants lead series 86-82-2. With Beckham not being able to get as much acceleration off the ball, Mills can be more aggressive early in the route.

As I feared, Doug Pederson completely shirked the run game, despite being in a tie game with the highly respected Chiefs into the fourth quarter. He knows his running backs have to become a bigger part of the offense. Wentz has six touchdown passes in his last three games. It is crucial to protect the football and force them to drive the ball to score. The Giants are struggling on offense.
