Costa who? Alvaro Morata scores stunning hat trick in Chelsea rout

24 September 2017

Azpilicueta was again on hand to help Morata score, as he chested the ball into Morata's path for him to poke home from close range.

"Now he has to continue this way to be a great striker", said manager Antonio Conte, who on Friday showed himself so enamoured by his new striker that he said he was the sort of polite young man any father would like his daughter to marry.

In the second half, Stoke fans demanded the dismissal of Marcos Alonso after he fouled Mame Biram Diouf having already been on a yellow card.

The defending champions are now in third place in the league table! It is not easy to win away against Stoke and I remember we struggled here last season but won at the end.

"Our fans were fantastic today and don't forget in this stadium the crowd push a lot", Conte said after a win that cemented Chelsea's position in third place before they travel to Madrid for their Champions League fixture with Atletico. After 77 minutes, Johnson had a careless pass blocked and Morata moved through the gears easily to accelerate away and past the hapless Fletcher before dinking another sumptuous finish past Butland.

"We are talking two players who are very strong, two really good players, two number nines who are very strong".

Seen as a replacement for Diego Costa long before the Blues agreed a deal with Atletico Madrid to sale the Spaniard once the January transfer window opens, Morata's early impact has impressed Conte, but the Italian feels the 24-year-old can improve in many areas.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes went into the match short of central defenders with Kurt Zouma, on loan from Chelsea, ineligible and Ryan Shawcross, Geoff Cameron and Kevin Wimmer all injured. It has flattered them somewhat. Defensive errors took it away from us.
