Martin has stressed that her daughter did not get inside the walk-in freezer after being intoxicated at the party, but someone at the hotel was involved in her death.
"It was just an accident waiting to happen", said Chicago activist Andrew Holmes, according to the Chicago Tribune. "The important part is we all wanted to know: Did anybody call her down there?"
Holmes said no one forced her into the freezer, but the family is awaiting the results of the teen's toxicology report to determine if someone possibly slipped narcotics into her drink. "Did anybody force her down there?", Holmes said. Was anybody on the other side, in the room when she got down there? And the answer to that is "no'".
Rogers, in a written statement said, "The family has not been provided any video or other evidence of Kenneka Jenkins walking into a freezer".
The footage, he said, shows Jenkins, 19, waiting in the lobby of the Crowne Plaza Hotel after her friends had apparently gone back to a hotel room where a party was being held to collect her phone and vehicle keys.
Also Thursday, the Crowne Plaza offered to pay for the funeral expenses for Jenkins.
Holmes said he can't comment on all of the video he reviewed because police are still working on the case. "Our hearts go out to Kenneka's mother, her family and friends", spokesman, Glenn Harston, told WGNTV. We hope covering the funeral costs provides a small bit of relief for them.
However, Jenkins' family is pushing back, saying later Thursday that they were misrepresented by activists who had called for the news conference. Police have told ABC7 from the beginning of their investigation they do not suspect any foul play is involved in the young woman's death.
Activists chanting "No justice, no peace" and carrying signs calling for "Justice for Kenneka" marched down River Road near Balmoral, shutting down traffic in the busy entertainment district.
He said the department has released the surveillance video to Jenkins' family and to the Cook County Medical Examiner, which has yet to rule on the cause and manner of Jenkins' death. Her body was found on Saturday. Wednesday they pushed their way into the hotel's lobby. However, it was later revealed that Sanders' suicide attempt was not connected to Jenkins and that she was not present at the hotel. The doors close behind her and Jenkins is seen no more, he said. She was reported missing at 1:16 p.m. that afternoon. Police did confirm they are looking into video from 47 surveillance cameras in the hotel as well as viral video footage appearing to show Jenkins partying in the hotel hours before her death.
The family of Jenkins, who was found dead in a suburban hotel freezer, is taking issue with the investigation into her death.
