Russian Federation may reduce U.S. diplomatic personnel by 155: Putin

07 September 2017

Russian President Vladimir Putin had not received an invitation from USA counterpart Donald Trump to attend a meeting on reforming the United Nations, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said Thursday. Calling it a "naive" question, Putin said he and Trump were both working for their governments and only engaged in state activities. He is not my bride, neither am I his bride or groom. "Every state has its own interests".

"I very much hope that we will be able, as the current USA president has said, to reach some compromise in resolving bilateral and worldwide problems", Putin said.

The move caused an uproar in Moscow, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claiming Federal Bureau of Investigation officers had searched the San Francisco consulate.

The comment marked a significant departure from the positive tone struck by Russian state media and officials leading up to Trump's election last November.

US President Donald Trump proposed holding the event prior to the session of the UN General Assembly on September 18.

Putin too praised Trump as someone who wanted to improve ties with Russian Federation.

U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January, saying he wanted to improve ties with Russian Federation. The United States is defending the legality of its move to shutter Russian diplomatic facilities in San Francisco, New York and Washington after Moscow said it would sue.

According to the Russian president, he could reduce U.S. diplomatic staff in Russia by 155 more positions, in addition to the 755 already eliminated.

Last week, the White House said that Trump had personally ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in San Francisco and annexes in Washington D.C. and NY.

"The fact that Americans have reduced the number of diplomatic representations in the USA, well it is their right, but it was done not in a polite manner and that does not give credit to our American partners", Putin said Tuesday.

Putin said the US had a right to close consulates but "it was done in such a rude way".

The ministry threatened the US would "bear the total blame for the ongoing degradation of the relations between our countries, on which the current condition of the global stability and worldwide security largely depends".

At the news conference, he called the shuttering of some Russian diplomatic facilities in the United States "an obvious violation of property rights" and said that, "for starters", he would instruct the Foreign Ministry to challenge the decision in court.

"The fact that the Americans reduced the number of our diplomatic institutions is their right", Putin told reporters. It is another matter altogether that they have done this in way that was absolutely uncivil. That does not reflect well on our American partners.

"It is hard to hold a dialogue with people who mix Austria with Australia", he continued, apparently referring to a decade-old gaffe by President George W. Bush, who during a 2007 visit to Sydney referred to Austrian troops when he meant Australian troops. "Probably such is the level of political culture in certain parts of the USA establishment". "As for the American people, America is truly a great nation if the Americans can put up with so many politically uncivilised people".
