Former 'Tonight Show' studio becomes new Blizzard Arena esports venue

07 September 2017

Blizzard revealed Thursday a new live-event venue, the Blizzard Arena Los Angeles, which will host Season 1 of Overwatch League. Situated in the legendary Burbank Studios, once home to groundbreaking television shows, the studio at Blizzard Arena Los Angeles has been custom-tailored to support an exciting live-event experience for local attendees and broadcast audiences around the world.

Blizzard continues to march towards a new wave for esports with the announcement that the company will open a brand new facility for esports competition: the Blizzard Arena Los Angeles.

The Blizzard Arena Los Angeles marks a huge step forward for Blizzard, not just for the Overwatch League, but for all Blizzard esports.

The facility will also have a practice space so players can prepare for competition - such as a locker room for its video-game athletes.

Blizzard Arena Los Angeles will also be the home of Overwatch League play with the entire series taking place predominantly in the arena until each of the individual teams sets up their own respective arenas.

With the year-over-year growth of e-sports and the increasing number of events across Blizzard's franchises, Gordon said the dedicated studios will prevent the company from building an arena from scratch every time.

The arena will open for its first event on October 7, when the Overwatch Contenders season one playoffs take place.

Its Blizzard Entertainment wing has unveiled Blizzard Arena Los Angeles, set in Burbank Studios (home to The Tonight Show broadcasts hosted by Johnny Carson and Jay Leno), planned to open October 7.

"We're at a tipping point for esports and we look forward to helping usher in a new era of competition-based entertainment", said Blizzard CEO and cofounder Mike Morhaime in a statement.

Beginning October 13, the Hearthstone Championship Tour's Summer Championship will bring top-notch Hearthstone pros to the Arena for a full weekend of competition, with $250,000 on the line. In August, Blizzard held an "Overwatch" competition at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, and it will host a championship game at its annual fan convention in Anaheim.
