India beat Sri Lanka in fourth ODI

03 September 2017

Virat Kohli has now hit seven of his 29 ODI hundreds against Sri Lanka.

A rampaging India will fancy their chances of completing a 5-0 whitewash of Sri Lanka when they face the beleaguered hosts in the fifth and final One-day worldwide match on Sunday.

The 1996 world champions and two-time finalists needed at least two wins against India in the series to secure a direct spot in the tournament which will take place in 2019 in the United Kingdom.

"Well, as we spoke out there in the middle, it was very hot and humid".

The 36-year-old has been at the peak of his powers as India's "finisher" in the series against Sri Lanka ending unbeaten in all three of his innings so far. In that scenario, West Indies could go through ahead of Sri Lanka by beating Ireland and winning the England series 4-1.

However, Dhoni has proved his doubters wrong with some key contributions to Virat Kohli's side in the island nation. So it was not too different for me to come back.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who made 49 not out, became only the sixth Indian and the second wicketkeeper-batsman after Kumar Sangakkara to play 300 ODIs. When they are good, and Dhoni is the best limited-overs keeper in the country.

Sri Lanka had no answer to Indian Bowling while chasing the mammoth target.

Mathews and Milinda Siriwarsana offered some resistance in the form of a 73-run partnership, but once Siriwardana was caught behind off the bowling of Pandya for 39, Sri Lanka's collapse resumed. But Angelo Mathews fought a lone battle scoring 70 to save Sri Lanka from an even heavier defeat - not that 168 was a small margin.

Lasith Malinga ended the batting onslaught by dismissing Kohli for 131, the paceman´s 300th ODI wicket. I think we did well given the fact that it was really hot. It's not easy. Last five matches, we didn't post 250. "Hopefully they will comeback strong and perform well in the coming games", he said. They need the experience.

Kohli, who was named Man of the Match, was thrilled to have won again, and said: "We spoke about not being complacent at any stage, today was a clinical performance". His 6/54 in the second match of the ODI series will be remembered for a long time by Lankan fans. It was a good toss to win. They have already foregone the opportunity to automatically qualify for the 2019 ODI World Cup by failing to win two matches in this series. "Batting order is flexible and we can experiment depending on the situation of the game".
